The Avocado mattress company was founded in 2016 by a group of mattress makers who wanted to create a natural, non-toxic, and sustainable line of mattresses made of certified organic components.

Mattress performance
As of writing this Avocado Eco Organic Mattress review, it has been a month since I received it and set it up on a platform bed. I have had plenty of time to form a fair and unbiased opinion about all of the following characteristics of the mattress. Note that these opinions will vary from person to person because of two main factors: personal preference and your physiology (height, body weight, and BMI).
Motion Isolation
The mattress must be on a solid foundation that does not rock back and forth to test motion isolation. Bed frames with loose screws and wheels tend to amplify the motion created on the mattress. I had it set up on a wooden platform bed for this Avocado Eco Organic Mattress review that did not produce any additional movement when changing sleeping positions.
There is minimal motion transfer to report for the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress. Thanks to the 8″ coil unit, there is little motion transfer to the other side of the bed when changing sleeping positions. Lower than average motion transfer makes the Avocado Eco Organic a fantastic option for couples looking to switch to a natural latex mattress at an affordable price.
The coils are individually wrapped and not interlinked, which enables them to function independently of one another. Individually wrapped coils allow targeted support while not transferring motion to the other side of the bed. The latex layer does a fantastic attenuating movement because it is more responsive than polyurethane foam. Motion that is created on one side of the Avocado Eco Organic bed will be more localized than when compared to a polyurethane mattress.
I performed a wine glass test to measure the degree of motion felt on the other side of the bed. You can see this test in the video at the top of this review. While turning over, there is a slight motion seen in the wine glass. It rocks back and forth a little but is far from tipping over. There is only a bit of movement in the water. Assuming your foundation and bedframe does not amplify the motion you create in the bed, minimal motion will be transferred to your partner when sleeping on the Avocado Eco Organic.
Pressure Relief
Pressure relief is the degree to which a mattress can relieve the pressure felt in parts of your body that have the highest amount of weight concentration and, consequently, have the most contact with the mattress. The pressure points you might experience are typically concentrated in the hip and shoulder area. On a mattress with poor pressure relief, you will feel discomfort in your hip, back, and shoulders. Excessive pressure buildup may cause you to “toss and turn” or change sleeping positions more frequently.
The Avocado Eco Organic pressure relief characteristic is most felt when sleeping on the side. In the side position, more bodyweight is concentrated over a smaller area. I could spend an extended period sleeping in this position on the Eco Organic Mattress. I did not feel any pressure buildup that would make me want to change sleeping positions.
Support
The Avocado Eco Organic has the right amount of support vs. softness. The firmness is perfect for my needs, not sinking in too much and not feeling like it is too hard. My shoulders, back, and hips feel well-supported. There is just the right amount of pushback while being able to sink into just the right amount.
Breathability
The Avocado Eco Organic is a fantastic option if you tend to sleep hot. The components are among the most breathable natural materials used in mattress manufacturing.
The cotton, wool, natural latex, and spring coil layers work in tandem to wick away excess heat and moisture from your body while sleeping.
When on a sheep, wool protects it by insulating it during the winter and wicking away moisture during the summer. It also must dry quickly after a rainstorm. The typical wool fleece composed of naturally curly hairs contains at least 85% air—the tiny pockets of air act as a thermal barrier for both hot and cold.
Under a microscope, the latex will appear to have open cells. A structure with many open cells makes natural latex a highly breathable material when used as a component for the comfort layer in mattresses. The way in which the natural latex cures in the manufacturing process leaves many open pores that enable air to circulate freely.
Edge Support
The Avocado Eco Organic Mattress has a perimeter made of reinforced individually wrapped coils. The coils are made with recycled steel in Avocado’s facility in Los Angeles, California.
The outer coils are made with a 14.5 gauge, while the interior zone is made with 12 gauge coils. The more supportive coils on the perimeter will prevent roll-off while you are sleeping close to the side of the bed. Also, the higher gauge perimeter coils make the mattress more supportive when sitting on the side while getting dressed and tying shoes, etc.
Is it easy to change sleeping positions?
I found that changing sleeping positions on the avocado eco-organic mattress was not strenuous and effortless. The amazing balance between firmness and give enabled me to change sleeping positions without effort. Since the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress is a hybrid, the extra bounce adds to the ease with which you can change sleeping positions while sleeping on this mattress.
Off-gassing and smell
When unpackaging the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress, I did not notice any chemical smell. Once I discarded the plastic packaging material and laid out the mattress on the platform bed foundation, there was absolutely no offensive smell to detect. The only smell you will be able to detect from the avocado eco-organic mattress is a faint smell of cotton and latex. The cotton will have a sweet fibrous smell, while the latex will have a lovely flower-like perfume. I did not detect any offensive smell while unboxing the mattress.
Firmness
The Avocado Eco Organic Mattress is rated as a 5/10 for firmness. That means it is right in the middle in terms of plush and firm. The medium firmness will be perfect for most people. If you have particular firmness preferences, you might want to opt for a mattress that offers a zippered cover. That way, you will be able to change out the foam comfort layer if the mattress firmness does not meet your needs.
I am pretty slim and tall, 6’3″ and 160 pounds. So, the medium firmness was perfect for me. However, if you are much heavier and require a thicker foam comfort layer, you can always get a 2-inch Avocado Eco Organic topper.
A heavier person, over 200 pounds, will need a thicker foam comfort layer. In this case, a topper may be necessary to achieve optimal comfort. Remember that you are covered by avocado’s 1oo night sleep trial to decide if you want to commit to your purchase. During this time, you can determine if it meets your needs.
You may want to add the 2-inch avocado eco-organic topper to add cushioning to the comfort layer of the mattress.

Slide Sleepers
Most natural latex mattresses these days rate a 6–7/10. That means that the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress will be slightly softer than most natural latex mattresses on the market today. Back Sleepers

Lightweight sleepers:
If you have a small frame and light bodyweight (around 110lbs), you may think that the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress is a bit firmer than most mattresses. However, the 5/10 firmness rating means that most people, even those of light bodyweight, will find the Eco Organic Mattress contouring and supportive without being too hard.
