Mattress toppers are used to increase comfort and support and are simply laid out on top of an existing mattress. Mattress toppers are sold as a standalone layer or wrapped in a protective cover.

How To Choose The Thickness Of A Natural Latex Mattress Topper

If you are looking for a moderate improvement of your sleeping surface, and you are a back sleeper, then a 1 or 2 inch all natural mattress topper will be sufficient to improve your sleep.

However, if you are a side-sleeper, you will be better off with a thicker topper. Side sleeping will cause more concentrated pressure on the mattress. Therefore, you will need the added support of a 3 or 4 inch topper so that you are adequately supported while sleeping on your side. The open cellular structure of natural latex makes for a cooler sleep experience when compared to memory foam. Air can flow through the natural latex more freely than it can with synthetic materials like memory foam or polyurethane foam. Polyurethane and memory foams are very dense when compared to natural latex foam.

In the manufacturing process, steam is injected into liquid rubber through metal rods that are part of the mold. When the foam has finished curing, workers carefully remove the foam from the mold. The rods that provide heat and steam to bake the liquid rubber into a solid foam leave behind channels for air to circulate. Through these ventilation channels, excess warmth and humidity are evacuated away from the body.

Note that many other factors will influence how warm or cool a mattress is to sleep on. Your pillow, bed sheets, mattress protector and comforter all play a role in regulating your temperature while you sleep.

Langria “natural” latex topper (not recommended)

This topper is included in my list of 100% natural mattress toppers in order to illustrate how easy it is to fall for a blended foam topper when your intention is to purchase a 100% natural latex foam topper.

Check out the Amazon page for the Langria topper, and you will see that it has all the markings of a 100% natural latex foam topper. However, the one thing that is missing from the product page is any mention of it being 100% natural latex. I emailed the company just to be sure and, just as I suspected, this topper is made of a blend of natural and synthetic latex.

Equally deceiving is the question and answers section of the same Amazon product page for the Langria topper. Someone asks whether Langria topper is natural latex or blended foam, and someone else replies that they think it’s 100% natural, at least that is what they thought when they bought it. It is unclear whether this person is a company representative or just someone who bought the product and is answering questions about it.

Rest assured that any product featured on NaturalMattressFinder.com is either organic or 100% natural. In other words, I don’t feature any products on the site that use toxic materials.

Some products that are labeled as 100% natural use synthetic materials like nylon thread. The term 100% natural refers to the core materials of the product, which in the case of mattresses and toppers is the natural latex foam derived from the rubber tree.

Here’s the rundown of the Langria topper. Note that I do not recommend this product. I’ve simply included it in my list to prove a point. So look for a mention of 100% natural latex if your goal is to get a latex foam product that is pure and not blended.

Langria also carries memory foam and gel foam on their website. There is nothing inherently wrong with this, but it is congruent with the fact that their “latex” foam topper is made of blended foams.

Conclusion

If you are disappointed with the performance of memory foam, a 100% natural latex foam topper may be your saving grace. The resistance of memory foam is greatly diminished once it is compressed and heated. Thich happens when you lay down to sleep on it or when you shift to a new sleeping position. Natural latex foam will always retain it’s resistance when compressed and will regain its original shape regardless of how many times it has been compressed.

A topper can be used for added comfort and support to your current mattress. Simply lay the topper over your mattress and you’re good to go. Make sure you use a mattress cover that will protect your new 100% pure latex mattress topper. Measure the height of your mattress to make sure that the cover will fit over your mattress with the extra thickness.

If you are really industrious, you may want to completely overhaul your mattress. In order to do this, you must cut through the mattress cover, remove the synthetic foam layers that have developed indentations and replace them with the same thickness of natural latex foam.

Often, the spring layer of a non-flip mattress is still in pristine condition even if the mattress is sagging or has indentations. Some padding layers inside the mattress will also be good for further use.
